By downloading or using Relato you accept these terms. If you do not, don’t use the app.

What Relato is

Relato asks one gentle question a week, records the answer in the teller’s own voice, and keeps it. It is a tool for a family to make something together. It is not a backup service, and it is not a place to store the only copy of something irreplaceable — see Back it up below.

What you get

A personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use Relato on devices you own or control, under Apple’s Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement, which applies in addition to these terms.

Relato is for family use. You may not resell it, rent it, reverse-engineer it, or use it to run a recording service for other people.

What you pay for, and what you never pay for

Relato offers a one-time purchase, sold and processed by Apple under Apple’s terms. There is no subscription and nothing to renew.

• The first four stories are free, always.
• The purchase unlocks recording the rest of the year you started.
• Export is free, for everyone, for ever — including people who never paid.

The paid tier gates recording new stories. It never gates leaving with the old ones.

Your stories are yours

Recordings, transcripts and everything else created in Relato belong to you and to the people in them. I claim no licence over them, no right to use them, and no right to look at them. I could not look at them if I wanted to: they are not anywhere I can reach.

Export is a permanent right, not a feature

At any time you can take out the complete archive — the audio, the transcripts, a web page that opens in any browser with no app and no account, and a printable book — in open formats that will still open in twenty years.

This is a commitment, not a convenience. If Relato is ever discontinued, this is the promise that means it did not take anything with it.

Recording other people is your responsibility

Relato exists to record someone else’s voice, which makes this the most important clause here.

Before recording anyone, you must have their permission, given in a way they actually understood. If they ask you to stop, stop. If they ask you to delete a story, delete it. If they change their mind a year later, honour that.

You are responsible for complying with the law where you and the storyteller are, including any rules about recording a person’s voice. I provide the tool; the consent is yours to obtain and to respect.

Family sharing

If you share a year so the storyteller can answer on their own phone:

• The stories live in your iCloud account, and the storage counts against your iCloud quota — roughly 200–250 MB for a full year.
• If your iCloud runs out of space, new recordings may stop reaching you. Their phone keeps its own copy and nothing they recorded is lost.
• You can stop sharing at any time. Doing so does not delete anything already on their phone, and it does not delete anything already on yours.
• Everyone you invite is invited through Apple’s own sharing screen, and Apple’s terms govern that part.

Back it up

Relato keeps stories on your phone, and — if you share — in your iCloud. A phone can be lost, and an iCloud account can be closed. Export the archive periodically and keep it somewhere you control. Export exists precisely so that this is easy, and it is free for exactly this reason.

Reminders

Relato can show one reminder a week, on the day you choose. There are no streaks, no counters, no “you missed a week”, and no messages designed to pull anyone back in. A skipped week simply waits.

As is

Relato is provided as is. I make no warranty that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, and I cannot be liable for a recording that fails to save, a phone that is lost, or an account that is closed. Where the law does not allow a limitation of liability, it does not apply to you.

This is the ordinary language of software terms, and it sits awkwardly next to a product about keeping a grandmother’s voice — so, plainly: I have built this as carefully as I know how, and the export exists so you are never dependent on me.

Refunds

Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple’s terms, not by me. If something has gone wrong, write to me anyway — david@delafu.dev — and I will help if I can.

Acceptable use

Record people who have agreed to be recorded. Relato is built for a family asking someone they love to tell their story; anything else is outside what it is for.

Changes and ending

I may update these terms; the current version always lives at this address with the date it changed. You can end this agreement at any time by deleting the app — export first.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Mexico, and any dispute falls to the competent courts of Mexico City, without prejudice to any consumer rights you have where you live.
